Sneg Shawl

here my friend Nicky is modelling the shawl
Credit: Bluelilystyle on Instagram and Ravelry. My lovely friend Akiko modelling the shawl

This shawl is perfect for winter as it wraps nicely around the neck to sit neatly under a coat or a jacket, or can be draped over the shoulders to keep warm at home or in the office. The lace motifs keep the pattern interesting but it is quite intuitive with no complex stitches. The shawl is knitted top down in one piece.

Sneg Shawl Pattern

Size: 151 cm/60inches wide (wingspan) and 56cm/22inches deep

Yarn requirements: 200g or 550 meters of DK weight yarn in main colour and 50g or 140 meters of DK weight in contrasting colour. I used Moeke Stela yarn for the body of the shawl and Blacker Yarns Mohair Blends DK in Tregadillett for the border.

Needles: 4mm (US6) circular or straight needle needles. For circulars, 100cm or longer cord is recommended.

Gauge: 16 stitches and 28 rows per 10cmx10cm/4 inch square in stockinette

Abbreviations:

CO – cast on

K – knit

P – purl

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

(…..) x – repeat the stitch sequence in brackets the number of times denoted after “x” sign

YO – yarn over

K2tog – knit two stitches together

SSK – slip, slip, knit – slip next 2 stitches to right-hand needle one at a time as if to knit; return them to left-hand needle one at a time in the new orientation, then knit them together through the back loop.

Notes: The pattern is worked top down. I have marked the beginning of lace sections for ease of navigating the pattern, but the row count is consistent throughout, without restarting for each new section. The rows, written out in bold and with stitch count given at the end in brackets are the increase rows.

Three main lace stitch patterns are charted for reference, but the instructions are all written out below.
